World coffee research
Studies show that up to 50% of today’s coffee-growing areas risk becoming unsuitable for cultivation by 2050 due to climate change. Securing the future of coffee requires knowledge and action today. That is why we are proud members of World Coffee Research.
Tomorrow’s Coffee Through Today’s Research
World Coffee Research (WCR), established in 2012, is a global research collaboration dedicated to developing coffee varieties that are more resilient to climate change. This initiative aims to protect the future of coffee growers and ensure sustainable coffee production for the next generations by investing in innovation and scientific research focused on climate change, plant breeding, and agriculture.
Historically, coffee cultivation has received significantly less research support to increase crop diversity compared to many other crops. Currently, there are only 111 known varieties of the coffee plant, whereas strawberries, for example, have as many as 6,640 varieties. This highlights the urgent need to support research and innovation to develop and strengthen coffee plant diversity, thereby protecting coffee for the future.
Today, WCR brings together over 190 companies from 30 countries. Arvid Nordquist is proud to be Sweden’s first member.
Our commitment to World Coffee Research is a vital part of our sustainability efforts. Together, we take responsibility for securing tomorrow’s coffee for generations to come.
