SUPPORTING FEMALE COFFEE GROWERS
The majority of the world’s coffee is grown on small family farms, often in countries affected by widespread poverty. Only 20–30% of coffee farms worldwide are operated by women, despite women making up around 70% of the workforce.
Many women become the sole caretakers of coffee farms, either as widows or because the men migrate to cities for work. Without formal ownership of their land, women face difficulties accessing credit, which is essential for purchasing inputs like fertiliser to increase production.
Through our Grown by Women initiative, we work to strengthen the position of female coffee growers and improve their livelihoods.
The coffee in Amigas comes from farms that are at least 75% women-operated, depending on availability. By choosing coffee grown by women, you help strengthen their position and support the development of their farms.
Through cooperative organisation, Fairtrade certification, and support from trade organisations, the farmers have received training on improving their agricultural practices, adapting to climate change, and enhancing environmental sustainability.
